Most VDC (ESP, DSC) system really work in tandem with the TCS or traction control system to maintain a certain dynamic angle for the vehicle and the traction control side is pretty well mixed up with the handling as it prevents the driver doing too much throttle steer, particularly on corner ext. Most car companies hate oversteer and the engineers are briefed to minimise the likely hood of this happening as its potentially the scariest outcome for the average driver.

The 350Z’s square footprint makes it a great handling car in point to point but the relative short wheelbase to track ratio means that when it starts a significant yaw motion (rotational acceleration relative to centre) and the rear starts swinging out its difficult to catch unless.... The VDC system starts braking the front quite noticeably to correct the handling bias or and and then the TCS will moderate the power delivery to help if it gets too far. In this way they work in tandem to control what would otherwise be difficult to do for a lot of drivers.

Now where we think some people get a bit hazy on the tech is that there is a VDC Off button but really this only increases the slip or yaw tolerance of the system but doesn’t turn off the VDC. Arguably it does significantly change the TCS behaviour but we’re still doing tests to work exactly what’s going on under dynamic circumstances.

romnation, our test 350Z was doing OK on circuit point-to-point stuff with the TSC (VDC button) turned on and some VDC tuning to change the corner bias. That way you enjoyed a tighter cornering with higher exit speed but the TCS was still there to catch you if you pushed too hard on exit.

Hope that helps.

Cheers
